The Apurimac canyon seen from Choquequirao

CHOQUEQUIRAO · 4 DAYS

CHOQUEQUIRAO · 4 DAYS

Description.

Known as the sister city of Machu Picchu, Choquequirao can only be reached on foot across the Apurímac canyon. A demanding trek rewarded with vast Inca ruins and very few visitors.

At a glance

  • Duration: 4 days / 3 nights, about 60 km round trip.
  • Difficulty: Very challenging. Steep descents and climbs of more than 1,500 m in the Apurímac canyon.
  • Altitude: From about 1,500 m at the river to about 3,000 m at Choquequirao.
  • Best time: April to October (dry season).
  • Access: Only on foot, which is why so few travelers reach it.

Highlights

  • A huge Inca site, often almost to yourself
  • The llama terraces, decorated with white stone figures
  • The deep Apurímac canyon and its condors
  • A true expedition with a local team of guides, cooks and muleteers
